Chronic Medication

12-month waiting period and will also cover pre-existing conditions. The chronic medication benefit is limited to only the main member.

GetSavvi Health covers treatment for three high-impact chronic conditions:

1     Type 1 Diabetes:

“Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, but usually appears before the age of 40, particularly in childhood. Around 10% of all diabetes is type 1, but it’s the most common type of childhood diabetes. This is why it’s sometimes called juvenile diabetes or early-onset diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas (a small gland behind the stomach) doesn’t produce any insulin – the hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. This is why it’s also sometimes called insulin-dependent diabetes.” We currently only use Humalog and Novorapid insulin.

2     Hypertension:

“Hypertension, also referred to as high blood pressure, is a condition in which the arteries have persistently elevated blood pressure. Every time the human heart beats, it pumps blood to the whole body through the arteries. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing up against the blood vessel walls. The higher the pressure the harder the heart has to pump.”

3     HIV/Aids:

“HIV” stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. To understand what that means, let’s break it down:

H – Human: This particular virus can only infect human beings.

I – Immunodeficiency: HIV weakens your immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. A “deficient” immune system can’t protect you.

V – Virus: A virus can only reproduce itself by taking over a cell in the body of its host.

In order to claim chronic medication, the member will need to have their network doctor complete a chronic benefit application form. The member will then receive their chronic medication either via courier pharmacy or they will need to collect it at a Medirite pharmacy found in a Shoprite store. Should the member be 10km from a Medirite pharmacy, we will deliver it to their doorstep. It is important to note that chronic benefits are subject to specific chronic medication formulary.
